"Tilted lighting fixtures that are tailored to the underwater dining space."

Customer challenge

SeaWorld® Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, operated by Miral and recognized as the region's first marine life theme park, features an immersive underwater dining experience at Cenote Café. Here, guests can savor their meals amidst the enchanting marine life. However, a design flaw emerged in 2023 related to the café's lighting.

The lights, intended to illuminate the dining area, were causing reflections on the acrylic windows, resulting in disruptive light dots and spots that diminished the unique underwater viewing experience.

Addressing this issue requires a delicate balance: providing adequate lighting for diners while respecting the light sensitivity of the aquarium's marine inhabitants. In response, SeaWorld® Yas Island, Abu Dhabi is actively seeking lighting solutions that not only resolve this issue but also align with Miral's commitment to sustainability, circularity, and reducing carbon footprints, further exemplifying their dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship.

Solution

Utilizing the innovative capabilities of 3D printing technology, the design challenge for SeaWorld® Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, was met with precision. This technology enabled the creation of custom luminaires, specifically crafted to direct light solely onto dining tables, thus minimizing light spillage into the aquarium. These fixtures stand out due to their remarkable customization options, which include a range of colors, transparency levels, and textures. Particularly, the unique asymmetrical design, optimized through 3D simulations, effectively eliminates reflections and glare on acrylic windows.

The use of 3D printing not only facilitated a bespoke design but also streamlined the installation process due to the lightweight nature of the materials. Philips MyCreation leveraged on-demand printing to expedite production, delivering the order within a four-week timeframe from the purchase order date. Additionally, these luminaires were crafted using recyclable materials, aligning with environmental sustainability goals.

This approach significantly reduced both costs and energy consumption compared to previous solutions. The collaboration between Miral and Philips MyCreation proved pivotal in delivering this innovative lighting solution promptly, playing a crucial role in enhancing the unique underwater dining experience at SeaWorld® Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.
