"It really shimmers like velvet,

We needed 

a global scale

For one of our latest designs, called 
a touch of archery, the key feature was 
a customized, hemispherical, translucent 
pendant lighting. Which should shimmer 
like velvet. And the embossed patron 
should be slightly darker. But in a warm 
tone. Plus we wanted a different patron 
on the top of the luminaire. Which would 
require a very difficult mold. We couldn’t 
find a solution. It couldn’t be produced…

A mission (im)possible

Until I saw the 3D-printing capabilities 
of Philips MyCreation on social media. 
And I thought, this could be a good idea! 
So I gave them a buzz. I said hey this is the 
design, this is the task. Can you do this? Yes, they said. Sure we can. And they succeeded!
With the design intent, the drawings, 
and the idea in mind, we started the 
conversation with Philips MyCreation. 
And did two rounds of samples. After 
we saw the second sample we were 
so close to the original design intent, 
we never thought that this could be 
possible. We had the final round of samples 
approved in less than 3 months! Which is 
an unbelievable speed when it comes to the production of a pendant light. This whole process exceeded our expectations by far.

Cooperation is key

McDonald's has ambitious targets for sustainability. In 2030 we want to reduce 
our carbon footprint by 60%. So every element counts. After we fixed the design part we recognized that with 3D printing we would also benefit from using 
sustainable materials. Philips MyCreation was able to deliver sustainably on a global scale by pushing the point of production closer to the point of use. 
This also helps solve the huge issue of speed. We are hoping to have the 
Philips MyCreation lighting solution in more than 100 countries across the globe in our McDonald’s stores in 2023. From Argentina to Japan. From Alaska to Australia. 
Also, having no stock gives us a huge benefit: it makes us flexible and it helps reducing costs.

To capitalise on one of their best foot-traffic sites in the country Rip Curl needed to enhance its visual appeal, further attracting customers to increase its share of market. The recent renovation of the store included a redesigned and elevated specification of the lighting scheme, to enhance the visual appeal and create a more inviting atmosphere for customers. As a certified B-corporation, the team at Rip Curl had high lighting standards to meet, requiring the lighting provider to thoroughly push the sustainability credentials of any installation.

High Lighting Standards to Meet

Made from bio-circular material, and recyclable at end of life, the Philips MyCreation Accent Track met and exceeded sustainability expectations. The Philips MyCreation Accent Track improved customer experience as well as address the company’s circularity requirements. With a high spec CRI90 colour rendering index, low glare and outstanding efficacy, there was no compromise that had to be made between performance and environmental consciousness. A sleek, compact appearance and integrated hinge made the fitting perfect or highlighting clothing racks and displays in store.

Exceeding Expectations

Philips MyCreations Accent Track luminaires provided Rip Curl Manly with a lighting solution that supported their sustainability commitments without sacrificing lighting quality. The fittings could be manufactured locally, reducing freight carbon emissions and supporting manufacturing in Australia. Additionally, this iconic store on The Manly Corso now has a fresh new look, befitting a brand with Rip Curl’s pedigree.

"From initial discussion

We were looking 

for more atmosphere

In itself, we had a good proposal from our design agency that suited our new 
style shop. But the proposed lampshades? They were a pretty tricky thing. 
Because they were made of concrete. Which made them very heavy and difficult 
to install. On top of that they had long delivery times and were not really 
sustainable either. So we started to search again.

Discovering the right source 

We’ve a relationship for years. We always build our stores together with 
them and they came up with the proposal to develop and print our lamps 
in 3D together! 
So that we could create the exact right pendant that we wanted for our stores. Which would fit seamlessly into our entire lighting plan.

That's where Philips MyCreation came in

The whole pendant is made from 
light, affordable materials that also make installation much easier. Which also 
saves time and allows us to build our stores much faster. 
This lighting now has the right shape, size, and atmosphere and also enabled 
us to recreate the concrete look very well. 

To us, it is very important that it is a really sustainable product. The whole luminaire is printed from recycled plastics. Which fits very well within the positioning of PLUS.
